“1!”, 2004

The last installment in Cokes’ Pop Manifesto sequence, 1! normally takes a stroll as a result of the artist’s music selection, presenting the titles of 100 the latest albums launched about a 5 calendar year period. This annotated discography is paired with excerpts from an essay by critic Christoph Cox discussing rock music’s kinds and ideological premises, all laid over an appropriated classic documentary detailing how to project a film. Writes Cokes: “One could read through the film projectionist as an amusing metaphor for present-day artwork and tunes practice. Often in today’s ‘digital age’, a hybrid product of cultural shopper and producer, like the DJ, VJ, or ‘laptop’ electronic musician, displaces the regular purpose of artist/musician.”


Tony Cokes lives and performs in Providence, Rhode Island, wherever he serves as Professor in the Section of Modern day Lifestyle and Media at Brown College.  An alumnus of the Whitney Museum Independent Research Application, Cokes has furthermore acquired grants and fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Basis, Nationwide Endowment for the Arts, New York Condition Council for the Arts, New York Basis for the Arts, and the Getty Exploration Institute. New solo exhibitions and screenings have taken put at the Carpenter Heart for the Visual Arts, Harvard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts Goldsmiths Centre for Up to date Art, London The Drop, New York Tate, London Hannah Hoffman, Los Angeles REDCAT, Los Angeles and Greene Naftali, New York.
